Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, made a rare public appearance at the premiere of the film "Black Panther 2" in Jamaica, where they mingled with the country's leader, who has expressed his desire to cut ties with the British monarchy.

The couple, who stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, were invited to the glitzy event at the Carib Theatre in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, by the film's director, Ryan Coogler, who is a friend of Meghan.

The film, which is a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster "Black Panther", features a predominantly black cast and crew, and celebrates African culture and heritage. Harry and Meghan, who have been vocal supporters of racial justice and diversity, praised the film as "inspiring and empowering".

The couple also chatted with Jamaican prime minister Andrew Holness, who has been a vocal critic of the British monarchy and has called for Jamaica to become a republic. Holness said he had a "cordial and respectful" conversation with Harry and Meghan, and that they discussed "issues of mutual interest".

However, the couple's presence at the premiere also sparked some controversy, as some Jamaicans accused them of being hypocritical and opportunistic, given their strained relationship with the royal family and their decision to quit their roles as senior royals.

A video clip of the couple arriving at the theatre showed them being escorted to their seats, which were several rows behind the VIP section, where Holness and other dignitaries were seated. The clip also showed Harry looking somewhat unhappy and uncomfortable, while Meghan appeared to be more cheerful and relaxed.

Some social media users commented that Harry looked "sad" and "lost", and speculated that he regretted his decision to leave the royal family. Others defended the couple, saying that they were brave and independent, and that they deserved to enjoy their life away from the spotlight.

Harry and Meghan have not commented on the video or the reactions to it. They are expected to stay in Jamaica for a few days, before returning to their home in Montecito, California, where they live with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.
