The Australian rock musician, who was born in Sydney in 1946, was part of the founding line-up of AC/DC in November 1973, along with brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, Dave Evans and Larry Van Kriedt. ¹
He played on the band's first single, "Can I Sit Next to You Girl", and performed live with them until February 1974, when he was replaced by Peter Clack. ¹
Burgess was also the drummer for The Masters Apprentices from 1968 to 1972, and had top 20 singles chart success with songs such as "5:10 Man", "Think about Tomorrow Today", "Turn Up Your Radio" and "Because I Love You". ²
In 1998, The Masters Apprentices, with Burgess, were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. ²
Burgess also performed in various bands with his brother, Denny Burgess, on bass guitar and vocals, including His Majesty. ²
AC/DC paid tribute to Burgess on their official website, calling him a "very respected musician" and a "great friend".
