Tips to Keep Maggots and Flies Out of Your Trash Can
Maggots in your trash can can be an unpleasant surprise, especially during warmer months. These creepy crawlers thrive in warm, humid environments, making your trash bin an ideal breeding ground. Here are some effective ways to get rid of maggots and prevent their return:
Bleach Solution: Mix equal parts bleach and water in an empty trash can. Close the lid and let it sit for half an hour to allow the bleach fumes to work. Discard the mixture and maggots, then spray the interior with bleach to eliminate any remaining odor.
Boiling Water: Boil water and pour it directly over the maggots. The intense heat instantly kills them. Afterward, let the can dry completely before using it again.
Vinegar: Combine vinegar and hot water in an empty bin, keeping the lid closed for 30 minutes. Spray any remaining maggots with the vinegar solution and let it dry.
Salt: Sprinkle table salt over maggot-infested areas. Leave the bin in direct sunlight for an hour—the heat and salt will dehydrate and kill the maggots. Rinse the can with water afterward.
Bleach and Freezer for Indoor Bins: If maggots infest your kitchen trash bin, move it outside. Place the trash bag in another bag and tie it up. Use bleach and the freezer to eliminate maggots and keep your indoor bins clean.
