The royal family has unveiled their Christmas cards for 2023, showing the different approaches of King Charles and his son Prince William.
The King and Queen, who celebrated their coronation in May, have chosen a formal photograph taken by Hugo Burnand in the throne room of Buckingham Palace. The couple are seen wearing their coronation regalia, including the Imperial State Crown and Queen Mary's Crown.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, on the other hand, have opted for a relaxed and intimate family portrait taken by Josh Shinner at their country home in Norfolk. The black and white image shows William and Kate smiling with their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, who are all dressed in matching white shirts and jeans.
The contrast between the two cards reflects the different roles and personalities of the father and son, who have both faced challenges and changes in their positions this year.
King Charles, who ascended the throne after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II in September 2002, has been busy with his constitutional and ceremonial duties, as well as dealing with the fallout of his brother Prince Andrew's involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
Prince William, who is second in line to the throne, has been focusing on his family and his charitable work, especially on environmental and mental health issues. He has also been preparing for his future role as King, taking on more responsibilities and engagements.
The royal Christmas cards, which will be sent to friends, family and colleagues, have been well received by the public, who have praised both the King and the Prince for their choices.
Royal fans have gushed over Prince George's resemblance to his father, and have also noted the similarity between Prince William's card and the one his parents Charles and Diana sent in 1984, when he was a cheeky toddler and his brother Harry was a newborn.
Some have also commented on the difference between the King and the Prince's cards and the ones sent by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who have been living in California since stepping back from royal duties in 2020.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not released a Christmas card this year, but have previously opted for candid and unconventional images, such as a photo of their son Archie crawling towards the camera in 2019, and an illustration of them playing with their dogs and chickens in 2020.
