Eric McCormack, the star of the hit sitcom Will & Grace, and his wife Janet Leigh Holden, a former assistant director, have decided to call it quits after 26 years of marriage. The couple filed for divorce on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, citing irreconcilable differences.
According to the court documents obtained by Us Weekly, Janet requested spousal support and attorney fees from Eric, and asked for an equal division of property. The date of separation was not specified in the papers. The couple share a 21-year-old son, Finnigan, who was born in July 2002.
Eric and Janet met in 1994 on the set of the TV series Lonesome Dove, where Janet worked as an assistant director. They had a secret affair for the first season, as they were not allowed to date the actors or the crew. They eventually came out as a couple at the wrap party of the show, and tied the knot in 1999.
The duo, who hold dual citizenship in Canada and the U.S., have been living a low-key life away from the Hollywood spotlight. They have been involved in various charitable causes, such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which they attended in March for the annual Academy Awards viewing party. They also supported Eric's Broadway debut in The Cottage, a comedy play that opened in July in New York City.
Eric, 60, is best known for his role as Will Truman in Will & Grace, a groundbreaking sitcom that ran from 1998 to 2006, and was revived from 2017 to 2020. He has also appeared in other shows, such as Perception, Travelers, and The Good Fight. Janet, 51, has worked as an assistant director in several projects, such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Guardian, and The Cleaner.
The couple have not publicly commented on their divorce yet, but they have posted some photos of their happier times on their Instagram accounts. In April 2020, Eric shared a throwback picture of them at the Lonesome Dove wrap party, and wished Janet a happy birthday. "Happy Birthday, @janetmccormack #gratitude," he wrote.
Janet also posted a sweet photo of them in June 2020, celebrating their 21st anniversary. "Happy Anniversary to my love, my best friend, my partner in crime, my everything. I love you more than words can say. Here’s to 21 more years of laughter, love and adventure. #happyanniversary #loveofmylife #soulmate #bestfriend #partnerincrime #adventure #laughter #love," she captioned the post.
It is unclear what led to their split, but it seems that they have grown apart over the years. They have not been seen together in public since July, when they attended the opening night of The Cottage. They have also stopped liking or commenting on each other's social media posts since August.
Eric and Janet are among the many celebrity couples who have called it quits this year, such as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, and Bill and Melinda Gates. We wish them both the best as they move on with their lives.
